Coming back to yoga after a long break
If you’ve taken a break from yoga (intentionally or not), you’re not alone. We recommend you gravitate towards the Hatha-based or Slow Flow classes. These will move more slowly through poses and allow you time to hold and explore alignment in each pose, helping you build in the right muscle memory. Hatha I or Slow Flow are your friends while you’re getting back up to speed with your strength and muscle/asana memory. Unwind Yoga is also a gentler alternative. Then perhaps try a few Hatha or Essential Flow classes. Restorative Yoga is appropriate for everyone and don’t be shy about trying out the Chair Yoga classes—they are for anyone to try, regardless of age or ability. You might even consider our periodic Intro to Yoga Series to really get back into the swing of things and to deepen your knowledge of yoga asanas and philosophy.

New to yoga
Brand new to yoga? We recommend you sign up for our Intro to Yoga series. In the meantime, we recommend you start by coming to the Hatha I classes. These classes move slowly from pose to pose, with instruction on alignment, how to approach each pose, and how to make the pose work for your body. Gentle Yoga and Chair Yoga will also be mellow and approachable options. Restorative Yoga classes would also be appropriate for someone new to yoga. Next recommended option would be Slow Flow classes if you like more movement and flowing between poses or Hatha II if you like to hold poses for a longer period of time. We always gauge our pace to the students in the room, though, so you will not be left behind and options will be provided. Unwind Yoga is also a gentler alternative that focuses on deep stretching. In general, we recommend waiting to come to flow classes until you have been coming regularly to Hatha I or other gentle offerings for a few weeks. Then incorporate Slow Flow and Hatha I, according to your preference. But you are most welcome to try out whatever classes you like; just pace yourself and let the teacher know you are newer to yoga so they can provide options for you.

Intermediate level experience
Flow I/II and Hatha II are your go-to intermediate level classes. Slow Flow, while slow, can also be very strength building. Hatha I allows you to go deeper into your understanding of each pose. And of course any of our specialty classes—like Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra, and Sound Bath—can augment and add variety to your regular practice.

Love core power, strong vinyasa
Please join us for our Flow II/III and Flow I/II classes to get a good workout even as you find grounding and centering. Yin Yoga, with its emphasis on the body’s connective tissue, can provide its own brand of intensity to balance out a strong Yang practice of flow.

Experiencing physical limitations
We all have varying physical limitations and abilities that change throughout our lifetimes. If standing for long periods of time or putting a lot of weight on the arms and shoulders is not best for your body, please consider attending our Chair Yoga classes. They are for people of all ages and body types who might benefit from practicing yoga from a seated position. We do go through some standing and floor poses as well but spend about half of the class seated. There are many asanas that can be beautifully practiced from a seated position. These classes are 45 minutes in length, making them even more accessible. Or try Gentle Yoga, which is primarily relaxing floor poses. Restorative Yoga is also accessible to all and we will help everyone find supremely comfortable positions to restore and rejuvenate the body.

Experienced but enjoy the mellow side
Slow Flow, Hatha I, Hatha II, Gentle Yoga, and Unwind Yoga may be the classes you will enjoy most. If you’re seeking an even slower practice, join our Yin Yoga or Restorative Yoga classes. The benefits of a slower practice are manifold, but among them: enhanced interoception (perception of what’s going on inside your body), and greater attention to fuller breaths, which helps reset your nervous system toward a more balanced parasympathetic state.
